SDGs
In 2015, the international community unanimously adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. With the central commitment to leave no one behind, the Agenda sets out 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 169 targets for the world to achieve by 2030.
ESG
ESG stands for Environmental, Social and Governance, the three key criteria by which the sustainability of an organisation is measured by investors and the civil society. Financial performance is no longer the only metric for investment decisions; strong ESG performance is increasingly seen as a key indicator of a successful business.
Paris Agreement and net zero
The Paris Agreement adopted at the UN COP21 summit in 2015 set a global goal of limiting the increase in average global temperature to well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and pursuing efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius. To achieve this goal, the world needs to achieve net zero, i.e., the total greenhouse gas emissions being equal to or less than the emissions removed from the environment. States, businesses, communities and individuals all play a vital part in this global effort to cut carbon dioxide and other emissions.
Biodiversity
The loss of biodiversity is just as catastrophic for our planet as climate change. Alongside the impact of global warming, the desctruction of habitats due to development is a major cause of this, and a huge number of species are facing extinction. We humans live in symbiosis with other organisms; the impact of the disappearance of a species has a cascading impact on the entire global ecosystem, of which we are part.
Circular economy
Circular economy is key to creating a sustainable world. We live in a linear economy in pursuit of growth through mass production, mass consumption and mass disposal, where we extract resources, turn them into products to consume and throw them away as waste after use. Circular economy is about closings the loop, which means products are used, reused, repaired, refurbished and recycled, and waste becomes resources again.
